The 38th Annual Mid-America Electric Flies Report (Part 1)
I arrived at the Midwest RC Society Flying Field about 10 a.m. on Friday, July 8, 2022. I noticed right away that the Midwest Flying Field was in superb condition. Midwest's mowing crew, consisting of Jim Latham and Bill Brown, Jr., had done an excellent job and they even took the time to slightly widen the flying field and roll the centerline area of the field. They had done an EXCELLENT JOB! The weather was almost perfect. The temperature was in the cool 60s and there were light winds and sunny skies. Denny Sumner, Roger Wilfong, and Jim Ouillette came out to help with the set up for the meet. Keith Shaw arrived shortly with his large sunshade. C.J. Wysocki had an early morning appointment, so he didn't arrive right away. The setup went slow and easy all morning long. All hands pitched in to help erect Keith's big sunshade. With most of the setup completed, the crew took some time for lunch and then enjoyed a few flights. About 2 p.m. the weather changed abruptly! Storm clouds rolled in and it started to pour down rain all the way through the evening! That ruined our Friday evening meet up with our out-of-town guests, which has always been a highlight of the Mid-Am. Bummer!!! The following photos show some of the set up on Friday and the great crew. Thanks all! The Cook Station Setup
Saturday, July 9, 2022 Dave Grife, of Coldwater, MI, was the first way out of town guest to arrive on Saturday morning, followed by Don Belfort of West Chester, OH, then Jim Ryan, from Cincinnati, OH was quickly followed by Mark Wolf from Brownsburg, IN, and John Kauk from Topeka, KS. As they were arriving, many, many of our local area flying friends also arrived. After a smaller event last year, due to the pandemic, it was great and very exciting to spend time and fly with all of our old friends! For two weeks preceding the Mid-Am, southeastern Michigan was caught in an extreme heat and dry cycle. A cool front passed through on the Thursday evening before the Mid-Am and brought some much needed and relatively cooler temperatures and low humidity. Even with the sun shining brightly most of the day, the midday high, on Saturday, was "only" in the mid-70 degree F range with low humidity. The winds, unfortunately, were relatively high with the direction switching throughout the day. There were also several thermals that popped through on occasion, and they made takeoffs and landings a bit exciting at times. Except for the wind it was an almost perfect day for this event. Keith Shaw and Ken Myers during the pilots' meeting Rick Sawicki photo Once the pilots registered for the FREE event, they started flying. A pilots' meeting was held at about 10 a.m. and Keith and Ken went over the field rules and special notifications as to "where not to land". There was a lot of flying of different types of aircraft during the day. Joe Hass battles the crosswind on take off.
All three of the previous photos were captured by Rick Sawicki. There was also a very special event that happened at the Mid-Am again this year. Rick Sawicki photo EFO and Midwest RC Society member, Bill Brown, Sr. had turned 101 years young in June. Joe Hass provided Mr. Brown another cake and we all got to celebrate this remarkable event one more time. Congratulations Bill and Happy, Happy Birthday!!! We also got to sing happy birthday to Bill, again. Thanks for the cake Mr. Joe Hass! At noon we broke from flying for a FREE field lunch of hot dogs, chips, and cold drinks. A HUGE thanks goes to Denny Sumner, Norm Peters and Greg Eilers. They not only handled the lunch crowd, but took on the extra duty of fixing the evening meal. Thanks so very much guys! After lunch everyone took turns flying at their leisure. It was a very, very relaxed flying day! During the very pleasant afternoon of flying, beside sharing Mr. Bill Brown, Sr.'s cake, there was a time for photos with Bill and the the other participants. Bill Brown, Sr. and Jr. are seen in the Rick Sawicki photo with the model of their full-scale plane. Most of the pilots at the 38th Annual Mid-America Electric Flies. We were also treated to some combat. Denny Sumner, Larry Markey and Rick Sawicki pulled out their FliteTest Bloody Barons to have a go at and delight the crowd with their aerobatic performances during streamer combat. There was plenty of time, although it went by all too fast, for friends, flying and food. The CDs, Ken Myers and Keith Shaw, found some time to relax and chat during the meet. That's Dave Grife's old Hacker 3D plane in the foreground. Aurelio Gonzalez had a good time flying his FliteTest Sea Duck and sharing the day with his boys. Lots of folks enjoyed sitting around, talking planes and life and just relaxing. Larry Markey prepares his beautiful scale helicopter for a great, scale-like flight. Larry's chopper in the air. Mark Rittinger prepares to fly his wing-swept forward design. Don Belfort watching Jim Ryan flying. The Best Scale Award was presented to Don Belfort of West Chester, OH. His Taylorcraft, from a much modified Icon Northwest kit, is a big, beautiful and an impressive flier. The Most Beautiful Award went to Steve Labuta, of White Lake, MI, for his scratch-built and modified Mach 1 old-time pattern plane. What a beauty it is and if flies every bit as good as it looks. Mark Rittinger photo The Best Multi-Motor Award was presented to Mark Rittinger from Roseville, MI. The Best Mini-Electric Award went to Jim Ryan of Cincinnati, OH. The airframe is his repainted and refreshed original version. The CD's Choice Award went to Dave Grife from Coldwater, MI for his 1993 scratch-built Mosquito. It is always a pleasure to watch this "older" electric airframe still flying. Steve's "Sport Plane" is at the far left Rick Sawicki photo The Best Sport Plane Award was presented to Steve Labuta of White Lake, MI. Ironically, he calls this self-designed model "Sport Plane". He notes that it has been influenced by several different sport planes with a big influence from SigÕs 4-Star Forty. There was no Non-Conventional Materials Foam Flurry this year as there were only a couple of planes that would qualify and the winds were a bit much for these generally lighter aircraft. Very nice work guys! After the awards were presented, the pilot's raffle was completed. There were many great donations this year from Nankin Hobby of Farmington, MI thanks to Mr. Joe Hass. Immediately following the raffle, Denny, Norm and Greg went back to work at the grill to prepare the cheese burgers and brats. There were more chips and drinks to complete the FREE meal. Don Belfort brought "Mid-Am" cookies and Carolynn Foss brought fig bars. Thanks so much guys!!! After dinner folks continued to fly and have a great time. Rick Sawicki's photo link, with many more photos of the event, can be found. here. More photos, and the report on Sunday's Open Fly, will be in the September 2022 Ampeer. Giant RC Estate Sale
