The 39th Annual Mid-America Electric Flies Report (Part 1)
By Ken Myers

I arrived at the Midwest RC Society Flying Field about noon. on Friday, July 7, 2023. I noticed right away that the Midwest Flying Field was in superb condition. Midwest's mowing crew, consisting of Jim Lapham and Bill Brown, Jr., had done an EXCELLENT job preparing the field for this event!

I cannot thank them enough for their extremely hard work! Thank you gentlemen so very much!!!

The weather was almost perfect. The temperature was in the cool 60s and there were light winds and sunny skies.

Denny Sumner, Dave Stacer, and Norm Peters came out to help with the set up for the meet.

Keith Shaw arrived about 2ish with his large sunshade. C.J. Wysocki had arrived a bit earlier than Keith and gave us a hand as well.

The setup went slowly and easily on this beautiful Michigan summer morning. All hands pitched in to help erect Keith's big sunshade..

With most of the setup completed, the crew took some time for lunch and then enjoyed a few flights.

A bit after 3 p.m., our out of town guests, along with several local fliers started arriving at the flying.

Dave Grife, of Coldwater, MI, was the first way out of town guest to arrive on Friday, followed by John Kauk from Topeka, KS. Jim Ryan, from Cincinnati, OH was quickly followed by Mark Wolf from Brownsburg, IN. Don Belfort of West Chester, OH, arrived with the traditional Mid-Am cookies and the Mid-Am was underway for 2023.

Time was spent setting up their sun shades, catching up, joking around and flying, lots of flying.

Once again, Friday afternoon, and into the evening, was the perfect time to be at the Mid-Am. What a change it was from last year, when it rained in the afternoon and evening on Friday.

The weather remained absolutely perfect with very mild temperatures for July, beautiful skies and light winds.

Many folks few well into the evening and had a ball.Once again, Friday, set up day, was a great time to be at the Mid-Am.

The Weather for Saturday

For a couple of weeks preceding the Mid-Am, southeastern Michigan was caught in an extreme heat and dry cycle.

A cool front passed through on the Thursday evening before the Mid-Am and brought some much needed and relatively cooler temperatures and low humidity.

Unfortunately, Saturday's weather forecast was a bit ominous! "They" predicted rain and scattered, possible thundershowers for the whole day.

Folks arrived early, with Denny Sumner taking the first flight at 8 a.m.

While the skies were overcast, the temperature and wind conditions were great!

There was a lot of flying until a little after 11.

It was decided that we should take a lunch break during the rain shower, not storm.

Shortly after noon, the skies cleared, the temperature remained moderate, as well as the wind and it was a gorgeous summer day!

It appeared that "they" were wrong, wrong wrong. Anyone surprised?

The weather could not have been more perfect.

     What a great day!

The Event Gets Going

Once the 23 pilots registered, for the once again FREE event, they started flying. Donations for Midwest's flying field fund were greatly appreciated.

A very brief pilots' meeting was held at about 10 a.m. and Keith and Ken went over the field rules and special notifications as to "where not to land". As well as a warning about the ticks.

There were a lot of flying of different types of aircraft during the day.

Once again this year, I am extremely happy to report that there was also a very special event that happened at the Mid-Am.

EFO and Midwest RC Society member, Bill Brown, Sr. had turned 102 years young in June. Joe Hass provided Mr. Brown another cake and we all got to celebrate this remarkable event one more time. Congratulations Bill and Happy, Happy Birthday!!!

We also got to sing happy birthday to Bill, again. Thanks for the cake Mr. Joe Hass!

And yes folks Mr. Bill Brown, Sr. did take the sticks, once again, during this years Mid-Am!!! Also, he drove himself to the flying field!!!

The photo of Bill and Joe was taken by Chris Myers.

At eleven, because of the rain shower, we broke from flying for a provided field lunch of hot dogs, BBQ chips, and cold drinks. (Donations were gladly accepted and MUCH Appreciated!)

A HUGE thanks goes to Denny Sumner, Dave Stacer, and Norm Peters. They not only handled the lunch crowd, but took on the extra duty of fixing the evening meal. Thanks so very much guys!

After lunch everyone took turns flying at their leisure. It was a very, very relaxed flying day!

You'll be able to tell when the following photos were taken. The morning photos have low light and gray skies and afternoon photos were taken during the gorgeous afternoon and early evening.

There was plenty of time, although it went by all too fast, for friends, flying and food.

Tony Cornell, of Stanwood, MI brought this big profile fun flier. He also had a great flying Kadet modified into a PC-6.

We were treated to a flight of Grumman aircraft, Hellcat, Wildcat and Bearcat, thanks to Don Belfort, Jim Ryan, and C.J. Wysocki.

CD, Ken Myers, found some time to relax and chat during the meet. From left to right in the photo are Denny Sumner, Mark Wolf, John Kauk, Jim Ryan and Ken Myers.

Pete Foss prepares to launch Snoopy and Woodstock.

We were also treated to a flight of 3, count 'em, T-28s.

Lots of folks enjoyed sitting around, talking planes and life and just relaxing.

Larry Markey prepares one of his many gliders that he uses on the Tuesday evening glider event at the Midwest Flying field. Many fliers gather for this event and frequent a local watering hole where the winning of the evening gets to purchase his own food and drink. WOW! Neat!

The Best Scale Award was presented to Don Belfort of West Chester, OH. His Druine Turbulent, was created using the rubber powered plans from Model Aviation's plans service and he had them blown up to twice the original size by them.

The Best Multi-Motor Award was presented to Jim Ryan of Cincinnati, OH.

This is a perennial favorite at the Mid-Am and one of his first designs in his original designs for Speed 400 motors many decades ago. Yes, folks its still flying!

The Best Sport Plane Award was presented to Denny Sumner of Canton, MI. It was build from the Old School Model Works kit and modified by Denny. It's a pretty quick flying plane when he wants it to be.

The Best Mini-Electric Award went to C.J. Wysocki of Saline, MI, for his Wildcat.

There was a Non-Conventional Materials Foam Flurry this year! Pete Foss competed with his Eagle, Joe Hass with his Stringless Wonder, Dave Stacer with his RUA 2-4-10 and Ken Myers with his RUA 2-4-10.

The CD's Choice Award went to Dave Grife from Coldwater, MI for his DH Swallow. It was converted from a Freewing Lippisch P.15.

The original Lippisch

     Very nice work guys!

After the awards were presented, the pilots' raffle was completed.

There were many great donations this year thanks to Mr. Joe Hass. According to Joe, the following businesses helped support the 39th Mid Am Electric Flies.
Nankin Hobby Chris Wrigley
Aspect Laser John Hoover
West Michigan Park Flyers Barb and Greg Markley
Electrodynamics Chris Tucker
Beacon Adhesives

We thank all of them very, very sincerely!

Immediately following the raffle, Denny, Dave and Norm went back to work at the grill to prepare the, dogs, burgers, cheese burgers and brats. There were more chips and drinks to complete the provided meal.

Don Belfort brought "Mid-Am" cookies and Carolynn Foss brought a pasta salad. Thanks so much guys!!!

After dinner folks continued to fly and have a great time.

Rick Sawicki's photo link, with many more photos of the event, can be found here.

Sunday, July 9, 2023

We had one more entrant on Sunday, Steve Labuta, from White Lake, MI.

He brought his great flying planes, including an AT-6 racing plane, Gotcha. He had previously won a Jemco kit of that plane at a Mid-Am. It was used as the inspiration for his model, as the Jemco kit, unmodified, would not have made a good "electric".

Many other folks returned to fly on this beautiful Sunday.

The photo shows the flight line on Sunday morning.

The Mid-Am is really about the people. There are a lot of friendships renewed and made at this event.

The following photos show just some of the great folks who participated this year. More photos will appear in the up-coming September 2023 Ampeer in Part 2 of this report.
