On Saturday, August 10, Midwest is holding the "Dog Days" open fly for all Midwest and EFO club members, guests and friends at their 7 Mile Rd. flying field. Flying starts at 10 a.m. A "flying field lunch" will be served at about noon, We hope to see many of you then. Come on out for a day of flying, friends and food! The 40th Annual Mid-America Electric Flies Report I arrived at the Midwest RC Society Flying Field about noon on Friday, July 12, 2024. Because of the recent heavy rains in southeastern Michigan, the flying field had not been mowed. We were going to start mowing after 3 p.m., as that is when the FAA NOTAM went into affect for this area. President Biden was coming to this area. Bummer for our flying on Friday. Dave Stacer, Denny Sumner and I discussed the cutting and started to cut the flying field about 2 p.m. or so since no guests had arrived yet. Roger Wilfong arrived about then. The weather was almost perfect for the set up and mowing. The temperature was in the low 80s and there were light winds and sunny skies. The general setup went smoothly and easily, after the field mowing, on this beautiful Michigan summer afternoon. Because of his recent shoulder surgery, Keith Shaw could not bring out his large canopy this year. And, yes, he is coming along well with his PT and recovery. A bit after 3 p.m., our first out of town guest arrived. It was John Kauk. He immediately volunteered to ride one of the garden tractors. Thanks John. Dave Stacer (Above) and Denny Sumner (Below) are shown mowing. John Kauk, from Topeka, KS, is shown as our special guest grounds-crew member. He can be seen manning one of the garden tractors. Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo of Roger Wilfong mowing the main flying field with Midwest's Vintage Ford tractor. The rest of the early arrival Friday crew arrived through the afternoon; Dave Grife, of Coldwater, MI, Jim Ryan, (Cincinnati, OH), Mark Wolf (Brownsburg, IN) Don Belfort of West Chester, OH. Don brought his traditional Mid-Am cookies and the Mid-Am was off to a good start for 2024. A new early arrival this year was Tim McDonough from Springfield, IL. That should be a familiar name to long time electric fliers. Unfortunately, this year, Friday afternoon and evening, were NOT the perfect time to be at the Mid-Am, as often stated before, because there was no flying! The folks who attended Friday made the VERY BEST OF THEIR TIME by catching up with their personal lives, sharing RC projects and just some generally good conversations. Some of the early arrivals are seen enjoying catching up and hearing more of Keith's great stories! It was still a great time on Friday! The Weather for Saturday Southeastern Michigan caught the leftover rain of hurricane Beryl earlier in the week. The flying field and parking area was still a bit soft, but not too soft to fly off of, or drive and park on. Saturday's weather forecast was for a hot and humid day. For once, "They" got it right. The day started out very warm with high humidity, and both went up from there. Fortunately, there was actually no wind to put up with. Yippie! There was a lot of flying until a little after 11:30ish. At that time, it was decided that we should take a lunch break, while a few others continued to fly. There was a lot more flying in the afternoon, as the pilots braved a temperature of near 90 degrees and the extremely high humidity. The sun beat down relentlessly. It was still a great day of flying with friends! While registration was pretty much self-registration, Dave Stacer (left) and Denny Sumner (right) welcomed folks and guided them as needed. Once the 23 pilots registered, for the once again FREE event, they started flying. Donations for Midwest's flying field fund were greatly appreciated. Keith Shaw and Ken Myers during the pilots' meeting Rick Sawicki photo Rick Sawicki photo A very brief pilots' meeting was held at about 10 a.m. and Keith and Ken went over the field rules and special notifications as to "where not to land". As well as a warning about the ticks. There was a lot of flying of different types of aircraft during the day. Pete Foss, Once Again, Flew His Giant Eagle Rick Sawicki photo Pete Foss Brought Back Snoopy and Woodstock on Their Skateboard Snoopy can be seen participating in the Foam Flurry later in the day. The photo was captured by Rick Sawicki. Denny Sumner (left) manning the grill as Dave Stacer (right) Plates Rick Sawicki photo At about eleven-thirty, we broke from flying for a provided field lunch of hot dogs, potato chips, and cold drinks. (Donations were gladly accepted and MUCH Appreciated!) A HUGE thanks goes to Denny Sumner, and Dave Stacer. They not only handled the lunch crowd, but took on the extra duty of fixing the evening meal. Thanks so very much guys! After lunch everyone took turns flying at their leisure. It was a very, very relaxed flying day! There was plenty of time, although it went by all too fast, for friends, flying and food. Rick Sawicki photo Wyck Livingston, of Marta, TX brought his big cub, which he flew beautifully. His father-in-law, Ken Johnson, can be seen standing to Wyck's left. Rick Sawicki photo CD, Ken Myers, found quite a bit of time to fly this year. Ken can be seen preparing to fly. Rick Sawicki photo Joe Hass prepares a couple of foam planes that he brought for his son, Chris, and himself to fly. Joe is responsible for gathering all of the donations that were used in the pilots' raffle. Rick Sawicki photo Chris Hass is seen talking with Keith. Chris is recovering from a very serious accident involving a 28" carbon fiber prop which seriously cut both legs. Later, Chris put in several very good flights. Nice work Chris. Rick Sawicki photo C.J. Wysocki (Saline, MI) prepares to take off his bipe for a fine flight. Rick Sawicki photo Pete Foss enjoyed flying his ornithopter throughout the day. The Best Scale Award was presented to Dave Grife of Coldwater, MI. His big, beautiful TravelAir is practically an antique now, but it still looks and flies great! Rick Sawicki photo The Best Multi-Motor Award was presented to Steve Labuta of White Lake, MI. This beauty flies as great as it looks. While he has no "official name" for his design, he calls it George. I really like George. Rick Sawicki photo The Best Sport Plane Award was presented to Denny Sumner of Canton, MI. The plane is an extremely well executed, Mark Rittinger designed, Pharaoh. Rick Sawicki photo The Best Mini-Electric Award went to Dave Grife of Coldwater, MI, for his Swallow. Dave assembled this available design. He selected the power system and it flies superbly. There was a Non-Conventional Materials Foam Flurry this year! Pete Foss competed with his Snoopy, Dave Stacer with his RUA 2-4-10 and Ken Myers with his RUA 2-4-10, and Roger Wilfong with his Ken's Cub. Rick Sawicki photo Roger Wilfong won the NCM event with about 18 minutes of flight time, with plenty of electrons still in his pack! Flying the High Pressure Foam Flurry Event Rick Sawicki photo Rick Sawicki photo The CD's Choice Award went to Pete Foss (Oxford, MI) for his Angry Bird. This is an extremely unusual design that really has to be seen in the air to be appreciated! Very nice work guys! Rick Sawicki photo Ken and Keith pass out the coveted Award Plaques. Rick Sawicki photo After the awards were presented, the pilots' raffle was completed. The pilots await the winners of the raffle. There were many great donations this year thanks to Mr. Joe Hass. According to Joe, the following businesses helped support the 40th Mid America Electric Flies.
We thank all of them very, very sincerely! Rick Sawicki photo Immediately following the raffle, Denny and Dave went back to work at the grill to prepare the, dogs, burgers, cheese burgers and brats. There were more chips and drinks to complete the provided meal. Grace Wilfong, Roger's wife, brought a great broccoli salad and Carolynn Foss prepared a fruit salad. Don Belfort brought the annual "Mid-Am" cookies. We all appreciated them. By the way, it always used to be a Mid-Am cake, but the pandemic brought and end to that. Shucks!! Thanks so much guys!!! After dinner folks continued to fly and have a great time. Rick Sawicki's photo link, with many more photos of the event, follows; photos.app.goo.gl/cr5NGou1CUr1keVt9. We had no more entrants on Sunday. The weather was expected to be high winds with scattered rain showers. Ken, Dave Stacer and Denny were at the flying field until almost 10:30. There had been scattered sprinkles and rain showers. They put away a lot of the items used to put on the Mid-Am and chatted as the morning got hotter and windier. The Mid-Am is really about the people. There are a lot of friendships renewed and made at this event. The following photos show just some of the great folks who participated this year. More photos will appear in the up-coming September 2024 Ampeer in Part 2 of this report. Rick Sawicki photo Rick Sawicki, our GREAT Photographer.
