New Bitza Plane
From Howard Evans
Forwarded by Pete Waters via email

Hi Pete,

     Hope all well in Florida.

Good here except hot and wet. Summer has arrived!

We are about to be evicted from our flying field and in process of moving.

One of our new neighbours has started complaining of noise - and we haven't flown there yet! (Wow, kind of a universal problem! KM)

See the new plane, it is wings and tail off a Hyperion Extra 260 and the Fuz is mine with no colour coordination. I used what film I had in workshop. 1.4m span 2.1kg

     Goes well. Still trimming.

Take care,
Howard

AN OLD FASHION HOBBY SHOP
From Joe Hass via email

On Saturday October 21, 2023 we gathered at the 5 Steakhouse in Plymouth, MI to remember my father's hobby shop, Wayne Hobby Center.

A request from my son, Chris, for a history of the shop (he wasn't born yet), a request of my second son David for a Delta Dart with the store advertising coupled with multiple conversations with Denny Sumner of his memories of the store precipitated the event.

Joining us were Keith Shaw (Mr. Electric), Pete Waters (Past District 7 VP and owner of KMI) and Dennis Waske (Waske Signs). Dennis creates all the wonderful designs on my aircraft. His father, Paul, was my Dad's best customer buying virtually every new kit that came in.

We shared decades of aviation memories. I brought along a number of old kits to help set the mood. Most did not know of my Dad's nautical interests and experiences.

The photo shows Grandsons Davis Hass, Chris Hass, Keith Shaw, son Joe Hass, Dennis Waske, Denny Sumner, Pete Waters.

Wayne Hobby was very much a "man cave" before they were invented. The retail section was in front. The back room had a full workshop plus a full kitchen. The coffee pot was always full. A steel insert in a window allowed for the break in of unmuffled glow engines much to the neighbors delight.

During the winter, tethered glow engine aircraft were flown indoors. Yes, the store got smoky from the exhaust fumes.

After dinner, and most Saturdays and Sundays, modelers would come to the shop to work on their aircraft with a ready source of supplies just a few feet away.

My Dad was always willing to take anyone and everyone for a flight in his Cherokee Archer. It was mostly at night as he had to keep the store open. A quick trip to Willow Run would net a flight over the Detroit skyline or a flight to Toledo for coffee.

If you take a close look of the storefront photo (Joe is on the extreme left) you will see he is holding a VW Beetle model with wings. Joe fitted his full size Beetle with actual wings for promotional events.

One of his favorite aircraft was the Shriek flying wing (pictured in pieces). He was famous for low inverted passes, sometimes with disastrous results. I have his last Shriek and still fly it. It has gone through 3 different engine and radio configurations. I have a N.I.B. Shriek kit too.

It was a different, easier time 37 years ago, now lost to rules, regulations and business standards.

An Important Note Regarding Skymasters Indoor Flying
From Pete Foss via email

Hi Guys

Please find attached the rules for flying indoors this year. I only made one change to them, I changed the maximum battery size from a 3S 2600 to a 3S 1300. We have been seeing some aircraft that were really too big to fly indoors over the last couple years so I decided to ratchet the max battery down

     See you Tuesday at 9AM!

Pete Foss
President Skymasters RC of Michigan

While the PDF with the Rules ia available on the Skymasters' Website, I've also posted them here with this link 2023-2024_Indoor_Rules.pdf.
