The Keith Shaw Birthday Fly-in
Coldwater Area, Michigan

The Balsa Butchers held their annual Keith Shaw Birthday Electric Flight Fly-in on Saturday, June 1st this year. As usual, Dave Grife was the Contest Director (CD).

The Balsa Butchers had their flying field in great shape.

The weather was pretty good for early June. The day started off cool, but steadily warmed to a very pleasant temperature.

While it was not extremely windy, there was some unexpected turbulence at times which gave the pilots a bit of a challenge.

Folks came from many places in Michigan and Indiana.

There was quite a bit of flying, despite the occasional bits of excitement do to the turbulence.

About noon, the Balsa Butchers put on a great "field" lunch for all of the pilots

It was another wonderful get together of electric fliers.

Thanks go to Dave Grife, CD, and his Balsa Butcher helpers for putting on this annual meet to celebrate Keith's birthday

We all hope to see you there next year!

A Few Photos From the Fly-in

The first two photos illustrate what a beautiful June day it was. It also shows some of the fliers, as well as the field lunch setup.

Carolynn Foss and Chris Myers catch up on what had been going on in their lives since they were last together.

Ken Myers and Keith Shaw celebrate his birthday and recovery, still in progress, from shoulder replacement surgery.

Keith's actual birthday was June 6, 1946. Seems we are all getting a bit older.

The June 2024 EFO Flying Meeting

The monthly EFO flying meeting was held on Saturday, June 8, at the Midwest RC 7 Mile Rd. flying field.

It was another wonderful June day to be at the flying field.

The morning started off a bit cool, but warmed as the day continued.

The winds were a bit "shifty" and the velocity went up and down quite a bit.

That made for some "interesting" flights.

While the turnout was a bit lower than usual, the camaraderie was great. There was a lot of talking about planes, flying and life in general.

It is always a great pleasure to get together with these guys!

The July EFO flying meeting is the 40th Annual Mid-America Electric Flies on July 13 & 14.

We hope to see you there.

A Few Photos From the Flying Meeting

Ted, Denny and Arnie discuss some of the finer points of soaring with electric power.

Keith arrives at the flying field to test out his planes and his shoulder!

Lynn Morgan practicing pattern with his pattern plane.

Lynn's pattern plane is in the foreground as Denny prepares to fly his 4S powered T-28.

The NCM (Not Conventional Materials) Event

For the purposes of this meet, NCM airframes are mostly constructed from not conventional materials i.e.; sheet foam, foam board, cardboard, block foam, foam insulation material, etc.

Foam Flurry for NCM aircraft:

This is a true event. It is based upon the all up/last down event of early electric meets. Any NCM aircraft may be used (no ARF types). Power systems are limited to a maximum of 3S (no paralleling) LiPo batteries or 4S maximum, no paralleling, for A123 packs. All planes qualifying for this event will launch at the same time, and the last one to land will be declared the winner.

VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR 2024 - THE FLYING FIELD ENTRANCE TO THE MIDWEST FLYING FIELD CHANGED FOUR YEARS AGO!

The old entrance to the Midwest RC Society flying field is permanently closed!!! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE IT!!!

This what the flying field entrance looks like.
Please Drive SAFELY

The field entrance is on the north side of Seven Mile Road about 1.5 Miles west of Currie Rd.
Entrance is on the north side of Seven Mile Road about 1.6 Miles west of Currie Rd.
The address is 7621 Seven Mile Road, Northville, MI 48167. The entrance is through a private residence drive and out past the barn.

Directions from Google Maps to the flying field.

To locate the Midwest R/C Society 7 Mile Rd. flying field, site of the Mid-America Electric Flies, look near top left corner of the map, where the star marks the spot, near Seven Mile Road and Currie Rd.

Because of their convenient location and the easy drive to the flying field, the Comfort Suites and Holiday Inn Express in Wixom, MI have been added to the hotels' listing. They are only 10 miles northeast of the field and located near I-96 and Wixom Road. See the map-hotel .pdf for more details.

The Open Air Swap Meet

There is a designated area for swappers. Please check-in at the event registration table before setting up. Someone from registration will point out where you may set up. Bring your own table(s) and chair(s).

There is no swap meet fee. A donation to the Midwest RC Society for the use of their flying field would be greatly appreciated.

Some Free Chargers Available and A Note
From Walt Thyng via email

Ken,

The items shown were given to me from a flier's estate. They are like new. A couple of then have the original boxes. I will give them free to anyone who would like them. The only cost would be shipping. I would prefer to move them all at once, but will break the lot up if I have to. Contact me at: thyng@att.net or 815-404-1086.

If nobody is interested, I will donate them to my club's table at our next swap meet. If they don't sell there, they will be trashed.

Walt Thyng

FYI: Due to accumulating health issues, I am restricting my hangar to mostly 800mm wing span models. I recently acquired an Eflite Aeroscout. With the gyro on, we (there are at least ten in the FVAC), regularly fly in 20 mph winds. With the gyro off, it is highly aerobatic. Perhaps the most fun plane I have ever had!

Long Time Midwest and EFO Member, Bill Brown, Sr. Turns 103!

On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, long time Midwest RC Society member, Bill Brown, Sr. turned 103!

His birthday party was held on Saturday, June 15th at Bill Brown, Jr. house in Northville, MI.

Bill Sr. was in GREAT spirits on that day as he greeted all of his guests.

Donna and Bill Jr. provided a wonderful feast for all of the guests, and there were a lot of guests!!!

The weather cooperated perfectly and it was a super fine day for the celebrations.

     Congratulations Mr. Bill Brown, Sr.

Bill Jr.'s wife, Donna is centered in the photo. Many of the Midwest members can be seen at the table behind Donna. There were also two other tables of Midwest and EFO members. What a great turnout it was.

As usual, Bill Sr. was the life of the party!
