Keith Shaw, RC Test Pilot - Update
via email from Keith Shaw

In the May issue of the Ampeer, Keith told us how he was the test pilot for a group of students at the U of M.

The following is an update, from Keith, on how the team faired at their event.

* * * * *

I just received a report from the UM Aero team. They passed the tech inspection and have made several mission 1 flights.

Right now they say they are in the lead as it flies with very tight turns around the course at full speed.

One of the students on the team flies and builds R/C as a hobby, and he reports "it flies like a dream".

They did not get a chance to paint it so it is still in primer grey, but did send three photos of the beast.

Remember it is limited to a 60" span and when folded must fit between two walls separated by 30". Apparently they were the only ones who did it with a folding fuselage, ergo the scorpion moniker.

Keith Shaw Surgery Update

Keith had shoulder replacement surgery on May 7. I did talk with him recently, and he sounded good.

Just as I was putting this article together, I received an email from Keith with photos of his x-rays before and after surgery.

The email was sent to a bunch of Keith's friends and Greg Gimmick has already chimed in with, "hear six million dollar man music!!!!!"

Yep, my cyborg friend is on the mend again.

     Take care now Keith.

Change of Email Address and More
From Laurie Baldwin via email
Melbourne, Australiar

I recently received the following from Laurie.

Ken,

Firstly thanks for your service to electric flight and the production of the Ampeer. It's always a pleasure to get your notice of the latest version. It's much appreciated.

Secondly, could you amend my email address.
(Which I did. KM)

Finally, another thank you, illustrated by the attached pics.

I got started in electric flight in the era of Speed 400s with models like the Squert.

My more recent builds were of the Boulton Paul Defiant.

Your publication has helped me along the way and I trust it will continue.

Cheers,
Laurie

     Thanks for sharing Laurie.

This also serves as a reminder for Ampeer subscribers. If you wish to continue receiving the monthly notice, please update your email address whenever you change it.

Thanks,
Ken

The May 2024 EFO Flying Meeting

The May EFO monthly flying meeting was held at the Midwest RC Society 7 Mile Road flying field on Saturday, May 18.

It had been postponed from the previous week because of the weather.

The weather could not have been more perfect for flying. The sky was blue. The temperature was in the mid-70s and the wind was almost nonexistent. Now that's what I call GREAT!!!

There was a lot of flying and catching up chat to do since this was the first flying field meeting of the year.

Before flying, there was a lot of charging going on at the Midwest charging station.

One thing was a bit different.

Many of the EFO members are also members of the Midwest RC Society.

Midwest has a glider league and they meet every Tuesday evening for some friendly competition and a trip for food and drinks following the fun at the field.

It was a great day for setting up new gliders and flying in general.

     Everyone had a great time.

For the purposes of this meet, NCM airframes are mostly constructed from not conventional materials i.e.; sheet foam, foam board, cardboard, block foam, foam insulation material, etc.

Foam Flurry for NCM aircraft:

This is a true event. It is based upon the all up/last down event of early electric meets. Any NCM aircraft may be used (no ARF types). Power systems are limited to a maximum of 3S (no paralleling) LiPo batteries or 4S maximum, no paralleling, for A123 packs. All planes qualifying for this event will launch at the same time, and the last one to land will be declared the winner.
