Please keep in mind that all summer monthly EFO flying meeting dates are tentative and quite fluid depending on the predicted weather. The meetings are usually on Saturdays, but may change to the following Sunday or even possibly a week or more later. Everyone is welcome and proof of AMA membership is required to fly. The next EFO monthly meeting is Sat., November 4 at 11 a.m. Informing the Public About Our Hobby From Mark Rittinger via email Getting information, regarding our great hobby, to the general public is very important. The local Fox Channel 2 TV station has a segment on it called "The Nine". During this part of the broadcast, the hosts discuss various topics. One of the topics, on September 19, 2023, was the importance of having a hobby when you retire. Viewers text them with comments and photos regarding the various topics being discussed. The hosts randomly select posts and share it with the viewers. Mark sent the following text and photo, which was shared. Way to go Mark! Super Job! Skymasters' Indoor Flying Season Has Started
Hey Indoor Pilots, I'm very happy to announce that we will be hosting indoor flying at UWM Sports Complex, in Pontiac, again this year! Tuesdays 9-noon just like last year. Please see attached for the complete schedule. The first flying date was Tuesday October 17th, so get your indoor planes in order! Thanks,
Pete Foss
The flyer that Pete mentioned is at the end of this issue. KM An Important Note Regarding Skymasters Indoor Flying
Hi Guys Please find attached the rules for flying indoors this year. I only made one change to them, I changed the maximum battery size from a 3S 2600 to a 3S 1300. We have been seeing some aircraft that were really too big to fly indoors over the last couple years so I decided to ratchet the max battery down See you Tuesday at 9AM! Pete Foss
While the PDF with the Rules ia available on the Skymasters' Website, I've also posted them here with this link 2023-2024_Indoor_Rules.pdf. Regarding Battery "Retirement"
Hi Ken, Hope all is well there. By the looks of the latest Ampeer, it appears to be. I was happy to see Keith out and flying! It would be nice if he can return to his old self soon. I enjoyed the battery retirement piece and agree wholeheartedly that it isn't a cut and dry formula deal. I'm accused of being anal with my battery routines and I suppose it's true even though I no longer log every cycle in a book, etc. I do log baselines on new packs and periodically check tests against them looking for a trend. I'll admit to being somewhat slack on my cheap 3S packs, but I do maintain my regimen of putting them into storage charge level if they are going to sit for long. The upside to my routines is I have some packs that aged very well. I just recycled a 4S 5000 pack that was dated June 2010. I flew three yesterday that were 2013 vintage. Admittedly they are not in current hungry EDF's or the like, but regular sport models that are still aerobatic. I have two 6S packs that have seen their eighth birthday. My oldest 3S-2200 packs are ten years old and relegated to my Lazy Bee. I have consistently reassigned packs to less hungry airframes as their numbers decline. This routine has served me well for a long time and stretch those retirement dollars. I'm going to order one of those Aurora's Joe Hass showed you. I'm doing a lot of flying at a local park flyer field and that looks like a fun one. Still enjoy the effort you put into the monthly newsletter! I don't even want to think about how many years we've been doing this. Take care,
Thank you Greg for all of the great knowledge you've shared with the electric flight community over these many, many, many years! I'd also like to thank those who emailed to and about Keith. I've forwarded your comments to him. Thanks,
LiPo Under Load Voltage; How Low Should You Go?
I recently watched a YouTube video by RC Video Reviews. It was titled "THE TRUTH about the BEST LIPO cutoff voltage to SAFELY get the most out of your batteries". Screen Capture from the Video I felt that this was a well presented and thought out video using a lot of analytical data. The presenter used the SKYRC BD250 250 Watt 35 Amp Variable Battery Discharger and Analyzer Tester for Hobby Remote Control Vehicles Digital LED Display Continuous Discharge to gather the data. The presented data, and his conclusions, very much mirror my collected and analyzed data over the years, as well as my personal conclusions and recommendations. I believe that it is well worth the watch. Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Ah, Remember Summer!
The photo shows Ken Myers returning to the flight line with his RUA 2-4-10 trainer after the all up last down. He was beaten by Dave Stacer who also flew an RUA 2-4-10! The photo shows Rick Sawicki flying. The photo shows Joe Hass, a HUGE supporter of the Mid-Am, flying one of the many, many planes he brought that day. Thanks Joe! Jim Ryan readies his venerable and famous Wildcat for another years' flight. Love it! Hope you can join us in 2024 for the 40th Annual Mid-America Electric Flies.
