Please keep in mind that summer flying EFO meeting dates are tentative do to weather. The flying meetings are scheduled for a Saturday. Because of predicted winds or rain for the scheduled date, the actual date could be changed. Members will be notified, via email, as to the correct time, date and place. Everyone is welcome and proof of current AMA membership is required to fly. Spectators and visitors are always welcome. The next EFO monthly flying meeting is scheduled for Saturday, September 7 at 10:00 a.m. at the Midwest RC Society 7 Mile Rd. Flying Field. If the weather is not suitable on that date, the meeting might be postponed. Please check the EFO for updated info. A Tale of Two Switches
I always have arming switches on my planes because the A123 batteries are permanently mounted and buried in the big scale fuselages. Back in the Nicad days, I used the DPDT 10amp/contact toggle switches that were available from Radio Shack. By paralleling the contacts, I found they could easily handle 40 amps of holding current. The switches are never operated under load, so the contacts survive well. But with Radio Shack's demise, those switches became hard to get, as they are not standard items available through Digi-Key, Mouser, or Allied. I switched (ouch) over to a DPDT rocker switch with 16-amp contacts. Everything had been fine until two weeks ago. Within four days, I had THREE of the smaller toggle switches fail in the "on" position. Two of them had been in service for 40 Years. Phase of the Moon Perhaps? I have spent this last week upgrading the toggle switches to the rocker type. Five planes have been done, five to go. Some were easy conversions, but a couple will take some serious thought. I'm leaving the toggles in the small/low current planes. Someday I will get back to the Darmstadt D-22. Sigh... Keith PS Recovery is going very well. I haven't been on O2 for five days now, and yesterday I mowed the lawn and did some heavy yard work. The O2 levels stayed acceptable. The August EFO Meeting, NOT! Unfortunately, do to predicted high winds, the EFO and Midwest RC Society joint flying session was cancelled. Ken cancelled any possibility of an EFO flying meeting for August because the following week, including the weekend, he and Chris would be exploring the Michigan's sunrise coast from Pinconning to Rogers City. The weekend after that was the C.A.R.D.S. of Lansing 14th Annual Electric Fly on the 23 & 24. The weekend after that was Labor Day weekend. Can you believe it? August was gone!!! Change of Email Address Requested

Thank you so much for sharing these great photos with us CJ. Please plan to come to the 41st Annual Mid-America Flies next July and join in on the fun, friendship and great flying. Hope to see you then, Ken & Keith. |
