This is maiden flight of FT Old Fogey. It had some issues with being tail heavy and and i made horizontal tail modification that helped alleviate all these problems.
Not a good video, cell phone shot vertically, and plane too far away to make observations but can see some Dutch roll.

The first plane we purchased from Flitetest. It is called the Old Fogey. This is a great beginner plane as it is easy to biuld and repair. It also has very forgiving flight characteristics making it easy to fly as well. The best part is you can biuld it very inexpensively as Flitetest has free plans you can print up and you can pick up the Adam's Board at a local dollar store.
Video CLEARLY demonstrates that this is NOT a GREAT BEGINNER plane. It gets squirrelly on first and second takeoff attempt. Pronounced Dutch roll and tail heavy. Really illustrates the poor flying qualities of this plane.

The FliteTest Old Fogey didn't exactly 'fly' in THIS video... but it certainly will after I give it a nose-job and mount the battery properly. This was purely builder/pilot error.
CG too far aft, looks like the Dutch roll exacerbated the crash shortly after take off from the ground.

This is the video I saw that made me think about moving servos to the back in my V2 version.
Still has short V-stab/rudder. Hand launch, plenty of power, appears tail heavy but doesn't have a lot of Dutch roll, but there is some still exhibited. Flown with no landing gear. He noted in Portugese that it few very well - it doesn't!

Blew up the Flite test Old fogy to 150% Put the wing span at about 56" This was the maiden flight. A little tail heavy but flew great.
CG obviously incorrect. Appears to have less 'dihedral'. Fin still 'small' in proportion to the plane like original OF. It does not fly great!

Flite Test Old Fogey flying in about 8 mph winds. I'd highly recommend a 1000mah battery for this plane instead of the 500mah that the FliteTest.com site recommends. Even with a 1000mah battery, you have to place the battery at the farthest end of the swapable powerpod (next to the prop) in order for it to properly balance out. For me, using a 500mah resulted in a tail heavy plane that almost didn't make it back down in one piece. But with the right battery placed in the right place, it flies pretty good!
Took off nicely into the wind, still Dutch rolls. Pretty good is not how I would describe its flight characteristics.

My variation of a tried and true design the Flite Test Old Fogey. Wanted something big and slow that would be fun to fly, a crowd pleaser at my local park, and didn't have paper laminated foam peeling off and bubbling after a few rough flights, and less than perfect landings. This is just what i came up with. Made with pink fanfold foam, 1 inch Dow blue foam hotwired down to 1/4 inch, bamboo skewers and chopsticks. The wheels are just 1 inch blue foam with an old FM antenna thru the center.
Much, much larger V-stab/rudder. Plenty of power, but it still flies very poorly.

Great day out flying the Old Fogey and FT Versa Wing with my Dad and brother.
I wasn't expecting the wing to fold on the Old Fogey like it did but that was totally my fault. It wasn't designed for that. Nothing a little tape and a BBQ skewer couldn't fix. It did stand up pretty well to hitting the tree. It met its end by going out of range and torpedoing into the ground.
Appears tail heavy and has Dutch roll. Wing folds after loop at about 55 sec.

After realizing that one of the servos was reversed we gave it another go with better results. I built this over the winter and have been waiting to get it in the air. I need to adjust the D/R so it's a little more stable.
Tail heavy, Dutch roll. It is not over control causing the problem, so adjusting the dual rates will not help much, if at all.

This is my test build of the Old Fogey by plans from Flitetest.com. It's also the first time I ever flown a large RC plane outside of my Phoenix RC simulater. That and the fact that I forgot one major thing made this a fast unstable flight that ended as expected.
Tail heavy, almost uncontrollable by pilot, lots of Dutch roll. The video clearly demonstrates why this is not a good beginner plane if FliteTest's CG and V-stab/rudder proportions are followed.

Really Amazed at how well it flies. It was built a little heavy with thicker foam than DTFB, and it has lots of packing tape, but its got a higher rated power pod so it balanced out well in the end.
Hand launch, no landing gear into nose dive into ground. Take off with landing gear, tail heavy. Flew a few seconds and crashed. Elevator sensitive. Appears to have a larger V-stab/rudder proportion than original OF. Not sure why it is still so tail heavy with a 4S 1000mAh pack.

Just the issues of maidening scratch builds, always having to out the kinks as you go we need to buy a 9/4.7 and a new hi tech micro servo we will also get a smaller prop for more power when it comes to getting off the ground and also fighting the C.G flight problem.
Poor CG placement, Dutch roll. Explains problems and possible fixes. Never succeeds because of broken servo on elevator. Only video I found explaining the problems. Nicely done.

I originally placed this in the success group, but after review, moved to fails. It looks to be in designed proportions, beautiful, flies better than most, but still has CG too far aft and there is some Dutch roll apparent. It has an interesting servo postion that might, or might not, be better than on the rear sides.

Hand launch, tail heavy. The pilot flies it reasonably smoothly, but when the angle of attack is increased a bit, the Dutch roll becomes very apparent.

The first few attempts to fly the Old Fogey. I was all over the sky. it is not as easy as they said it would be. I may have to much control input.

HK Mariposa: balsa FT Old Fogey: foam board
FliteTest's Old Fogey doesn't seem to wallow as much or Dutch roll as much. Noted bigger power system and larger/taller vertical fin in the video. Both planes still appear to have 'some' Dutch roll through the video. The bigger V-stab/rudder can be seen on the OF about 4:31 into the video. Mariposa has servos in the rear of the fuselage. Very obvious that the Mariposa V-stab/rudder is higher than the wing (6:30). Josh notes (8:20) that the tail of Mariposa is "majorly bigger" but also notes a larger version of the V-stab/rudder is provided in the latest OF kits. He notes the 'newer' OF kits have a 'tail' about an inch and a half taller.

After the untimely (and violent) demise of my first FT Old Fogey, I crafted a second one based on the downloadable plans posted on flitetest.com. This incarnation flies even better than the first!
Hand launch with wheels. Flown very slowly and not a lot of Dutch roll apparent. Looks like taller V-stab/rudder and CG looks good.

Slow and easy flier. This one seems more stable for some reason. It is tail heavy, which can be seen near end of video. Whether it has a larger V-stab/rudder can't be seen in the video.

Flies nicely. No Dutch roll. Video note: "Flitest Old Fogey with extra fins to fix wing wobble". Added two smaller vertical fins further out on the horizontal stab. Looks like a good idea.

Take off shown and then onboard video. Doesn't have much, if any, Dutch roll. Rear facing camera demonstrates how little control movement is really needed. Several seconds of ground based video shows the plane flying well. Good video. Can't make up my mind whether this is success or fail. It is right on the cusp.

Corrected CG and V-stab/rudder increased by 20%. Short flight at Ultimate Soccer Arenas to check out the new new, effects of the new, larger V-stab/rudder. Maiden was outside at Clara Miller park on April 5 with the originally proportioned V-stab/rudder. Lots of Dutch roll. Flight ended in tree. Oops.
