     Please keep in mind that all summer monthly EFO flying meeting dates are tentative and quite fluid depending on the predicted weather.

     The meetings are usually on Saturdays, but may change to the following Sunday or even possibly a week or more later.

     Everyone is welcome and proof of AMA membership is required to fly.

More Thoughts to Share Regarding 2D-3D Article

     I should like to add a remark to your comment under the table 3 (...exactly the same value of the K ...) regarding the 3DWL comparison factor k (based on the eq.#4 - L. Renger / K. Myers value), and also to some other statements.

     The k was not included in my table as this example was meant to show how the K works at comparison of two different models with exactly the same value of the K. To get some more comprehensive picture, it is convenient that the k is also taken into consideration. This is now done; you calculated the k for both models (M1and M2) and put them into your table.

     If I refer to the example in the table 3, I agree that both models will fly differently with regard to their objective performance parameters, but not wildly different, if we take into consideration only the Rm and >m; the RTm is anyway more or less a visual criterion and not so important one. Also, the same level of flyability can be assigned to a broader range of numerical values of the K, so the tables are arranged in several levels. This enable us to accommodate similar models (with not the same value of the K) in the same level.

     The flyability, given by the K, can be a useful indicator regarding the ease of flying and the skills needed to fly a certain type of model, especially if also some other properties of models are taken into consideration and some test flying is performed by an experienced modeler.

The April/May EFO Flying Meeting

     While an April 2022 EFO flying meeting was planned in April, the weather and flying field conditions didn't allow it to happen. The flying meeting had to be postponed until Saturday, May 14.

     The meeting was well attended, and there was a lot of flying.

     The weather was warm and the winds were quite calm early on. As the day progressed, it got windier with some pretty substantial gusts as a line of thunder showers approached from the both the east and the west. That is very unusual for south eastern Michigan.

     The front from the east can be seen in this photo.

     Mark Rittinger came all the way down from Roseville and brought along some of his really nice planes, which fly great!

     He brought along a glider and a plane to act as a glider tug. Denny Sumner did a familiarization flight with Mark's tug and Mark flew the glider.

     The photo above shows Mark setting up for the day. The one below shows Denny coming back from his familiarization flight with MarkÕs tug.

     It was great to have Mike Russell back at the flying field after a several year hiatus. Early on in the day he actual got in a flight and said he was feeling pretty comfortable with it. GREAT!

     It was great to get the "gang" back together on a beautiful day for flying!

     We couldn't figure out why the very active EFO member, Rick Sawicki, wasn't there. His absence was noted in the following email.

UFO MODEL AIRPLANE CLUB, COMBAT EVENT, 5/14/2022

     Rick Sawicki is also an active member of the United Flying Organization, formerly the Union Lake Flying Organization, as well as the Midwest RC Society. It seems he was doing a bit of combat flying at the UFO field. KM

     I would like to share some pictures taken this afternoon (Saturday, May 14 KM) at the annual Club Combat Event.

     We were blessed with great weather and were able to complete 10 flights with 4 planes in each one before the rain hit.

     It was a great day, great event, great food and great club sharing of a really fun event for both flier as well as spectator.

     A special thanks to Steve for sponsoring and coordinating this event.

     The winner and Club Combat Champion for 2022 is Jim Wren.

Where to Get Modeling Supplies Today?

     I used to order small modeling items from Tower Hobbies, but it doesn't stock as many as in the past.

     Could you please recommend a hobby shop in USA that may hopefully cover my needs ?

Hi John,

     Oh my, I wish that I could! There is Horizon Hobby, that bought Tower Hobbies, but they arenÕt usually good for what I order.

     I have ordered from amain hobbies, but I've not explored that site much. For general hobby stuff, I'm just not too sure any more.

     Another good source is Retro RC. Mark Freeland runs it and is good friend of mine. You might find some interesting "stuff" there. He designs and laser cuts all of his own kits and has a lot of items to go with them.

     I sure wish that I could be more helpful!

Regarding - What's Inside Your Transmitter?

     The radio that is featured in the (May) EFO Ampeer column "What's Inside Your Transmitter?" is most likely galloping ghost but if you fire it up and it sounds like the neutral pulse rate is about six pulses per second you have a galloping ghost transmitter.

     Most vintage transmitters do still work. Receivers not so much.

     The large 9 volt battery can be replaced with a nine volt alkaline. Two 9 volts in series should operate the pulsar.

     It's hard to tell if the antenna is a plain whip or center loaded. The output transistor would probably be happiest with some sort of antenna.

A Bit of This and That

     The following information was garnered from a group email among a lot of well known electric flying pioneers. KM

     Okay, maybe not exactly building, but I did some modeling of a sort this week.

     After 24 years of hard campaigning, the Hellcat (maiden flight 1998) was really showing its age. For too long I piddled around with doing minor repairs and touching up the paint, but I finally accepted a total reboot was in order.

     A great truth occurred to me 3 or 4 years ago when I was restoring a walnut bookcase I built when I was 25: You know you're old when you're restoring antiques you built yourself. Well, likewise with repainting an old model.

     Anyway, this week I decided to charge into a total overhaul of this old friend. Glory be, in sorting though my paint organizer I found enough original Floquil to do the project! And after 25 years, it's still perfect. Best paint ever. I'll admit I'm a little rusty with my airbrush, so this wasn't the quickest job I ever did, but it turned out nicely.

     Owing to declining eyesight and arthritic hands, I let my friend Paula CNC cut the frisket masks.

     When this airplane was new, I didn't even need glasses for cutting frisket. How was that ever possible?

     Anyway, it's done and ready to install gear. And no, I'm not putting a Speed 400 in it. :-)

     Best of all, now the whole house is redolent with the smell of Floquil and clear coat. What a happy smell. Great memories.

     There must be something in the air, because this week I resurrected my "Mister Mulligan".

     I made up a new 6 cell A123 pack, cleaned it up, and installed a new receiver.

     For now I'm going to leave in the Astro Flite 25 with the "Super box" spinning a 16x10 prop.

Using a Neutrino Motor

     I am having a good time with this little motor. It was used on A 1938 Wren model weighing 5.3 oz. and powered by a single cell 160mAh battery. The radio used another of the same battery.

     I now run it on a 2S 500mAh pack, now with BEC, on the same little Wren and it makes an excellent little "fun flyer". It is still under 6 oz.

     It probably can stay aloft for 20 plus minutes.

     It uses an APC 6x4E prop with it 2S 500mAh battery.

     This morning. I had a 17 min. Flight with one climb and idle, and maintenance power. I had 30% left in pack.

     I had called Steve Neu about running the little Neutrino motor on a two cell LiPo. He said "no problem", just prop it down a little from its previous single cell setup.

     It is now drawing 3.3 amps at full power.

A Comment About Flying With a Spotter

     I don't disagree with Luis' feeling uncomfortable (Regarding flying at the field with other. See the May 2022 Ampeer. KM) under some conditions, but maybe we in Oz are somewhat luckier.

     Usually, our clubs restrict ourselves to a maximum of four (possibly five) pilots flying at any time. Next, we tend to run to a circuit so that most of the time we are flying in the same direction. We also keep pilots into the same grouping so that we can talk to each other. I don't mean simply chatting but telling each other if we are doing low passes or touch and goes or whatever else. It all helps.

     No, I don't suggest that midairs don't happen but if you are able to accept some basic rules they can reduce the chances. Nevertheless, spotters are handy, particularly if different types of flight are taking place such as aerobatics mixed with sailplanes or similar.

     Also, I will not fly if helicopters are being used on the strip. Too often a recipe for trouble.

Hi David,

     The procedures you mention are pretty much the same over here at the flying fields that I use.

     Luis is just across the border from here near Windsor, Canada. I used to fly quite frequently in Canada, and it was pretty much the same procedures at the fields that I flew at over there as well.

     I'm not sure what really makes him uncomfortable, but if he does, he has to work it out with those he's flying with.

     PS I don't fly with helicopters or multi-rotors in the air. I just give them their space and let them do their thing.

The NCM (Not Conventional Materials) Event
Traditionally, model aircraft airframes have been mostly constructed from balsa wood, plywood, spruce, and fiberglass. For the purposes of this meet, NCM airframes are mostly constructed from not conventional materials i.e.; sheet foam, foam board, cardboard, block foam, foam insulation material, etc.

Foam Flurry for NCM aircraft:
This is a true event. It is based upon the all up/last down event of early electric meets. Any NCM aircraft may be used (no ARF types). Power systems are limited to a maximum of 3S (no paralleling) LiPo batteries or 4S maximum, no paralleling, for A123 packs. All planes qualifying for this event will launch at the same time, and the last one to land will be declared the winner.

To locate the Midwest R/C Society 7 Mile Rd. flying field, site of the Mid-America Electric Flies, look near top left corner of the map, where the star marks the spot, near Seven Mile Road and Currie Rd.
