How This Portable Demo Layout Was Constructed

The bench top is two layers of foam board that have been laminated in opposite directions.

Tube

The side and cross support rails were made in a rectangular tube shape that I learned about in Flite Test videos. The fold is called a B-fold by Flite Test.

How to construct the side and cross rails is described in my article Building Foam Board Model Benchwork Side and Cross Rails.

Track attach 1

The track is attached using straight pins through the two layers of foam board and secured underneath the table top by pushing short pieces of model airplane silicone fuel tubing against the bottom of the table top.

The photo shows the bottom of the layout with the BULLFROG manual turnouts installed and the track laid on the top of the benchwork. The BULLFROG turnout controls work flawlessly and are really well designed!

BULLFROGS

This is a close-up photo of two of the BULLFROG's installations.

The complete portable bench top, with the track, weighed 11.6 lb. For comparison, a 3/4" 4' x 8' piece of plywood weighs about 60 lb. and won't fit in my car!

This prototype, feasibility study, design worked, but I believe I can do a better, cheaper, easier design using an egg crate technique as shown in the following graphic that I found online.
